Two Convicted Of Voluntary Manslaughter In OC Nightclub Brawl
(Santa Ana, CA) -- Two women are facing prison time after being convicted of manslaughter in the beating death of a young woman outside an Orange County nightclub. A jury Thursday found Candace Brito and Vanesa Zavala guilty of voluntary manslaughter and assault in the January death of Kim Pham outside the Crosby Bar and Nightclub in Santa Ana. Prosecutors had said the pair punched and kicked Pham in the head during a melee outside the club. Pham was taken off life support days later. Brito and Zavala will be sentenced in September.
Defense attorneys tried to argue that Pham was the instigator in the fight after someone from the suspects' party bumped into Pham outside the nightclub. Authorities agreed Pham threw the first punch, but told the jury that surveillance video showed Brito and Zavala going back to attack the woman even after they had been pulled away by bystanders.
