RENO, Nev. (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Tesla Motors is coming to Nevada.
Speaking at his Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas Thursday, the Nevada Democrat says he has spoken with Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval about the project to build a $5 billion battery factory near Reno.
A person familiar with Tesla's plans told The Associated Press that if state lawmakers grant expected incentives, Tesla will open its massive factory at an industrial park outside Reno. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made. An announcement is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Nevada's Capitol.
Tesla chose the site over sites in California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. The carmaker projects it will crank out enough high-tech car batteries to power 500,000 vehicles annually by decade's end.
